Description Biological Distinctiveness The Northeastern Coastal Forests are relatively rich, with over species and seven endemics. Of the 18 ecoregions classified as temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, the Northeastern Coastal Forests rank seventh in terms of richness and endemism, and first in bird richness with over species. It shares its borders with Long Island Sound to the south, New York State to the west, Massachusetts to the north, and Rhode Island to the east. In , the Connecticut Forest & Park Associaiton (CFPA) established the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trail System to better connect people to the land. The trails have grown over time to include roughly miles of public hiking footpaths across the State of Connecticut. Five forest and parks regions have been established in the Division: southeast (Region 1), northeast (Region 2), central (Region 3)i Connecticut Valley (Region 4) and the Berkshires (Region 5). Each region has a regional supervisor who is responsible for its management and he/she reports to the Director of the Division of Forests and Parks.
